Meta-Control

Meta-Control is a suite of 21 custom visual and kinetic software pieces for live audiovisual performance, extending Dynamic Compositions (2003) into real-time, algorithmic performative control.

Created in collaboration with Ali Demirel, Meta-Control treats generative visual systems as instruments. Each piece is a responsive, algorithmic environment—not reacting automatically to sound, but performed in parallel with music. The performer actively shapes the visual flow live, working in temporal dialogue with the music to form a shared performative language.

The work was developed and performed with electronic music pioneer Richie Hawtin, becoming an integral element of his live sets. Rather than functioning as background visuals, Meta-Control acted as an equal partner to the sonic architecture—visual systems embodying the music’s spatial and rhythmic qualities, producing a layered, immersive experience.

Premiering at Time Warp in Mannheim (2007), the project went on to international stages including Club Phazon in Tokyo, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF), and Sónar. Audience recordings capture its impact in large-scale club environments, where image and sound fused into a unified sensory field.
