Open I/O

A software suite for composing and operating distributed electronic media—enabling real-time data exchange over the Internet.

Open I/O was a suite of software services and applications for composing and running distributed electronic media, allowing users to exchange data over the Internet in real time. Inspired by the peer-to-peer file-sharing architecture of BitTorrent, it was designed to support decentralized, scalable communication between physical devices.

It was part of OPENSTUDIO’s Device Infrastructure and powered the network-based electronics prototyping board Pinkie, enabling the programming and coordination of custom sensors and actuators across remote locations.

Open I/O was initiated in collaboration with Vincent Leclerc at the MIT Media Laboratory.
