Terms & Conditions

A writing system that rewrites unread user agreements—exposing the moment we trade away rights for access in the digital economy.

Terms & Conditions is a custom typeface (Typeland) and writing software designed to rewrite user agreements from popular web platforms. The work critiques how legal language is used to shield platforms from regulation while enabling the exploitation of user data—all under the guise of consent.

These agreements—often written to satisfy legal requirements—are rarely read by users. As a result, people routinely hand over their rights with a single click: the all-too-familiar “I agree” moment. This piece responds to that quiet surrender.

The project focuses on rewriting the terms and conditions of five early social web platforms, including MySpace, YouTube, Sosyomat, Facebook, and Google. The resulting images are generated through a three-part process:

  1. The artist retypes the selected text
  2. The software assigns a dynamic size to each letter as it’s typed
  3. The custom font renders the evolving form of the agreement

The final visuals are not just recycled legal text—they are performances of consent, moments where unread agreements are re-inscribed as aesthetic objects and public critique.
