Truth is Concrete Network Maps

Network maps visualizing collaboration and shared tactics among participants of Truth is Concrete, a 24/7 marathon camp on political and artistic strategies held at the steirischer herbst festival.
Truth is Concrete took place at the steirischer herbst festival in Graz, Austria, from September 21–28, 2012, bringing together hundreds of artists, activists, and thinkers for a continuous week of lectures, performances, and discussions. I contributed two network maps to the project and gave a talk titled “Network as a Medium of Critique and Action” on September 25 at 8 PM in the Black Cube.
Collaboration Network
Participants were asked to name other attendees they had previously collaborated with. Their responses formed a collaboration network of 186 participants connected by 1,030 links. Each name is sized by its betweenness centrality, indicating how often it functions as a bridge within the network. A force-directed layout allows the nodes to settle naturally, making visible central figures, hidden relationships, tightly knit groups, structural gaps, and isolated individuals. Clusters are color-coded to indicate distinct sub-networks or communities.
Tactic Similarity Network
Participants also listed the tactics they use in their work, resulting in a tactic similarity network of 749 unique tactics, connected whenever two participants listed the same tactic. As with the collaboration network, node size is based on betweenness centrality, and the layout emerges through software simulation. The resulting map reveals widely used methods, indirect connections between practices, clusters of shared approaches, and peripheral or underused tactics.
